The seminar on increase of level of experts in the sphere of protection of the right for a freedom of conscience was held

 

The Commissioner for Human Rights together with Representation of the Council of Europe in Ukraine and National association of lawyers of Ukraine held regular seminar for lawyers and human rights activists concerning mechanisms of protection of human rights which this time had thematic emphasis on issues of upholding of the right of citizens for a freedom of conscience.

The seminar "The right for freedom of thought, conscience and religion in practice of the European Court of Human Rights" became logical continuation of the previous actions within implementation in Ukraine of the joint project of the European Union and the Council of Europe "Strengthening of opportunities of lawyers and human rights activists for realization at the national level of provisions of the European convention on human rights and the European social charter (revised)".

Opening event, the Representative of the Commissioner for observance of the rights of the child, non-discrimination and gender equality Ms. Aksana Filipishyna cited the analysis of applies to the Commissioner concerning violations of the religious rights and freedoms and announced a circle of problematic issues which the state has to solve urgently in order to duly ensure the constitutional guarantees of the right for a freedom of conscience and compliance to approaches in this sphere of the European Court of Human Rights. "Discrepancy in a number of cases of the national legislation to the constitutional guarantees and obligations assumed by Ukraine according to international treaties testifies to essential importance of holding today's training event", – the Representative of Commissioner Ms.Aksana Filipishyna noted.

Upon results of participation in a seminar its participants gained new knowledge of opportunities of use in a daily professional activity of provisions of the European convention on protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms as effective instrument of upholding in courts, and in particular in the European Court of Human Rights, the rights for a freedom of conscience.

The cycle of seminars on mechanisms of protection of human rights will proceed next year.
